The console leveraged the Neo Geo library, with iconic titles like “Metal Slug,” “King of Fighters,” and “Samurai Shodown.” In essence, it was the same arcade experience, but reduced to compact discs and with solid hardware for its time. However, not everything was perfect. The CD loading times and dependence on the CD-ROM made some players notice differences compared to the cartridge version, especially in access speed and transitions between screens.
Another important factor was the market and competition. At the time, the CD offered greater storage capacity and the possibility to add music and voice samples. But the console faced background noise: the cost of the console itself and comparisons with other systems more popular in the West, such as Sony’s PlayStation, which was already drawing attention with 3D graphics and big franchises. Still, the Neo Geo CD cultivated a loyal niche of fans who valued the arcade compilation and the ability to play at home without spending fortunes on cartridges.
Over time, the Neo Geo CD remained a romantic curiosity of the 90s: a solution to enjoy the arcade flavor without spending as much, but with limitations that kept many away from daily use.
