A Bit of Retro Gaming History

The Sega Mega Drive Master System Converter 1, also known in some markets as the Power Base Converter, was an accessory developed by Sega that allowed the Sega Mega Drive to run games from the previous generation console, the Sega Master System.

The accessory appeared in the late 1980s, around the launch period of the Mega Drive.

Historical Background

When Sega released the Mega Drive in 1988 in Japan (1989 in Europe and North America), the company already had a strong player base thanks to the Master System.

To help players transition to the new 16-bit console, Sega developed an accessory that allowed gamers to continue using their existing games.

This solution had several objectives:

  • Protect the investment of players who already owned Master System cartridges
  • Quickly expand the playable game library of the Mega Drive
  • Strengthen Sega’s position against Nintendo and the Nintendo Entertainment System

This led to the creation of the Master System Converter, with Model 1 being the first official adapter released by Sega.

How the Converter Worked

The accessory connected directly to the cartridge slot of the Mega Drive.

Its operation was relatively simple because:

  • The Mega Drive already contained hardware compatible with the Master System
  • The adapter mainly functioned as a physical interface and electrical cartridge adapter

Main features

  • Cartridge slot for Master System game cartridges
  • Slot for Sega Card games
  • Compatibility with most of the Master System game library

When a game was launched using the adapter, the Mega Drive effectively switched to Master System mode, disabling its 16-bit functionality.

Converter 1 Design

The Converter Model 1 was designed specifically for the original Mega Drive (Model 1).

Design characteristics

  • Large black casing designed to match the aesthetic of the console
  • Included a Sega Card slot, removed in later versions
  • Perfect fit on top of the console

Due to the shape of the adapter, it is not fully physically compatible with later Mega Drive models without modifications.
