The Gakken console is hardly known today, but in the early 1980s, it was an interesting little video game platform from Japan. Developed by the company Gakken, which was primarily known for educational toys and electronic gadgets, the console emerged from the trend of the time: many companies wanted to capitalise on the growing popularity of video games – and Gakken was no exception.
In 1983, Gakken launched the ‘Gakken Compact Vision TV Boy’. This console was technically quite simple and offered only a limited selection of games. Unlike more well-known platforms like Atari or Nintendo, there were no interchangeable game cartridges; instead, all games were permanently integrated into the device. Neither the graphics nor the technology could impress compared to other systems of the time.
Nevertheless, the console had its appeal: it was compact, affordable, and easy to use – perfectly suited for young players or families on a tighter budget who could not afford more expensive consoles. However, the hoped-for success did not materialise. The strong competition from brands like Atari, Nintendo, and Sega made it difficult for the Gakken console to gain a foothold. Shortly after its release, the device disappeared from the market and largely fell into obscurity.
Today, the Gakken Compact Vision TV Boy is considered a coveted collector’s item among retro fans. Although it never achieved great fame, it symbolises an exciting era in gaming history – a time when numerous companies attempted to conquer the market with their own consoles. While some succeeded in breaking through, others like Gakken failed to do so.
Despite this, this little console remains a fascinating relic of the early 80s in the realm of video games.
